Juice Cleansing - Yay or Nay?

You may remember a time when bottles of green juice were sitting on placemats at mealtimes as a popular replacement for whole foods. And although this cleanse supports your body’s natural detox process, the high amounts of sugar in the fruits and lack of solid foods can be dangerous for some. So - how can it be done safely? Check out our recommendations.

1. Prepare well

It’s important to prepare your body a good 3-5 days before you cleanse to avoid shock. Certain foods such as caffeine, sugar, meat, dairy, wheat, alcohol, and nicotine are gradually eliminated to reduce headaches, cravings, and other withdrawal symptoms. It’s also important to increase your intake of fresh vegetables, fruits, and water during this time.

2. Go green

A high rate of green juices is recommended during the cleansing process as they usually contain less sugar. Make sure at least 50% of your juices are from green vegetables.

3. Beware the sugar!

Following the last tip, keep an eye on the sugar levels of your juices. Fruits usually contain higher amounts of sugar and lack fiber, slowing your body’s nutrient absorption ability.Try to keep the amount of them in your mixtures low.

4. Pace it out

It’s much healthier to pace your drinks out over time when cleansing, rather than gulping it all down at once. Make sure to also leave a good couple of hours between your last drink and bedtime to ensure a better overnight digestion process.

5. Recommended ingredients

Not sure which elements to include in your drinks? Fruits and veggies used to make the juices often include celery, kale, carrot, cabbage, apple, spinach, beets, and leafy greens. Avocados and bananas should be avoided as they don't juice very well and be sure to remove tough skins on fruits such as mangos to make juicing easier.
